Worsley is a town in Greater Manchester, with a population of about 10,090. It is 7.5 miles from Manchester
Roman and also Anglo-Saxon remains have been found in Worsley and the original settlement was close to two Roman roads. When the Bridgewater Canal opened in 1761 it enabled Worsley to grow its economy, it started as a small village of cottages and developed into to a thriving community with cotton manufacture, iron-working, brick-making and considerable coal mining. Later expansion of Worsley came after the First as well as Second World Wars, when large commercial estates were constructed in the region.
Today, Worsley is being considered as a World Heritage Site , including Worsley Delph. A considerable part of the town’s historic centre is currently listed buildings.
One of Worsley’s very early industries was weaving. A cottage industry, cotton was spun on spinning wheels and woven on hand-operated looms in people’s houses to create fabric. Sellers would market the cotton it at the Bridgewater Hotel, later called the Old Grapes Inn.
Worsley currently has little very little industry, it is a tourist destination and a commuter community. The area has two large hotels ; a Novotel and a Marriott. Worsley Old Hall is now a public house and there are several busy restaurants in the town .Wardley Hall is an early medieval house The present hall dates from around 1500 but was totally rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries. Worsley Old Hall is a Grade II listed building near Walkden Road, it is said to have had a moat but no remains of a moat have been found.
