Tyldesley M29

Tyldesley is a town in Greater Manchester, it is  8.9 miles northwest of Manchester. Tyldesley has a population of 34,000 The industrial revolution and development of the railway system in north west regions led to an expansion of  textile manufacture in Tyldesley , led to an explosion in the population because of the job opportunity.  After commercial growth decreased in the late-20th century, land reclamation and since then  post-war property developments have altered the landscape and encouraged financial activity along Elliott Road– Tyldesley’s central business location and the main road

When  the railway was finished in 1864, coal mining came to be the dominant sector and the community was bordered by collieries for more than  100 years, until the market declined after the Second World War. Bridgewater Collieries, Tyldesley Coal Company, Shakerley Collieries and Astley as well as Tyldesley Collieries were among the coal mines in Tyldesley. The last colliery in the area closed in 1968.

The worst mining disaster in the community happened at Yew Tree Colliery on 11 December 1858 when an explosion caused by a security light cost 25 lives, the youngest  was 11, and the oldest only  35 years Several of the victims are buried in the churchyard at St George’s Church Tyldesley.

Although it was heavily industrialised during the 19th century, Tyldesley is now  a residential town with no industry at all .  The main road with Tyldesley is the A577 .
